Addictive Web Stats
Are you a Stats Junky? Recently I feel as though I've become addicted to statistics, one of the dullest subjects ever devised. Suddenly I need to check how well my site is doing, how many visitors, how much bandwidth, which referers, what search engine terms, bad requests etc etc. The I have to switch over to my adsense stats, see if anyones clicked on an advert in the last day. The I have to jump over to digital point and check my links, backlinks, front links, upside down links and in bweteen links. Its getting ridiculous. Am I the only one. Why did this suddenly become so important?
I used to not care, it didn't matter if no one visited the site, if search engines ignored me, updates to the site might not have happened for a month at a time because I'd lost interest. Now, its like some invisible force pushing me along, keen to get new content and find new visitors.
I've sat here pondering on the reasons why, and I've come to the conclusion that its comes down to recognition - everybody wants that 15 minutes of fame, and the web is proving to be the way to get it in this technological age. No longer do you need to do something ground breaking, heroic, or sporting. You can simply create a website that people appreciate and the feedback will be enough for you to glow inside.
Perhaps its the little bit of show off in everybody that makes them want to show the world what they can do, from the blandest of blogs to the flashiest of websites, there has to be some motivation behind putting your work on public display for all to see. I don't buy the argument that people create websites for themselves - if this was the case, no one would ever publish anything, as there would be no point.
I guess everyone secretly wants to read that email in their inbox that says 'hey, I saw your site and its great, keep up the good work'.
