Blog Names - Does it Matter
I've just been browsing down the Feedster Top 500 Blogs list and have come to the conclusion that what you name your blog is one of the most important factors of all, and will possibly be the difference between a visitor landing on your site or going elsewhere.
Why do I say this? Well, when faced with a long list of sites that, in theory, should all be worth visiting (After all they are in the list for a reason) I find myself scanning down, looking for names that spark some interest. I could spend a couple of hours checking each blog in turn, but that would be applying to much structure and thought to the process - I don't want to ridgidly follow the list step by step, I want to jump to whichever one takes my fancy next.
So which ones did I visit, well, I first jumped to Boing Boing, the name seemingly a fun one (apologies to blogging old hands who have known about some of these sites for a long time and can't believe I've never visited them...). Then I hopped over to Gizmodo, mainly because it made me think about shiptergizm, and started making wonder whether that site was still going (its not - Gizma). After that, I went over to LifeHacker and then Signal Vs Noise.
So what does this prove. Absolutely nothing, other than the fact that I probaby probably ignored some very good blogs because the name didn't appeal to me. My loss most would say!
