Keeping the Pace
One of the things I've found most difficult since starting this blog is keeping the momentum going. Pressures of work and home life mean that getting the time to write is scarce, and when I do get opportunity I try and get as much down as possible. Because these moments of solitude are few and far between, I find it is important to try and get enough material written to ensure a buffer of posts is available, should I be unable to wite any posts for a while.
This buffering up of content itself can cause some issues, content written at the same time can end up being themed in a similar manner, not good if you are planning to post separate content over two or three days, on different subjects. Content can also suffer from being stale - an article written two days ago about a post your saw on somebodies blog may no longer be interesting or appropriate. These kind of posts are more 'instant' posts. It is better to save more generic thoughts and writings if you need to store up content.
If you do plan on writing a large number of posts, you need to be organised in how you save the work. I have found the easiest method is to write each post to a separate text file, named and dated with the article title. This makes it easy to see when it was written and what it is about. File naming can be further enhanced by adding a text length figure and proposed post date, this allows you to plan your posting to regular times of day.
A final enhancement is to separate final content with draft content into folders, this ensures that you don't post half finished or unrevised content by mistake. Items only get moved into the final content folder when the draft has been corrected revised as appropriate.
Being organised can at first seem like a time consuming task, but after a few days it becomes second nature, and makes its easier to see your content planned out over a few days, rather then over the next 20 minutes.
I would also advise a time of reflection on what you have written before posting any content to your blog. This ensures that the quality of your posting is the best it can be, and any rash decisions to post an argumentative or hostile post are fully thought through before you commit yourself.
